Provincial Grand Lodge of Warwickshire

Climb Every Mountain

Members of Apollo Lodge 301 were privileged to have the Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro David Macey with them at their meeting in March, and presented him with a magnificent cheque for £1,050 towards the Warwickshire 2012 Festival.

The donation had arisen as the result of six Brethren of the Lodge - W Bro M Banner (Master), W Bro K Hogan, W Bro S Hogan, W Bro G Hogan, Bro N Pearson and W Bro A Cheetham – having entered the “Three Peaks” challenge the previous June.

This entailed climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell and Snowdon within a 24 hour period, which they commenced at Ben Nevis and after a long (and fast) drive and thankfully very kind weather the Brethren completed the challenge at the foot of Snowdon with 15 minutes to spare.

Thanks go to everyone who was kind enough to sponsor the Brethren in this challenge, to be followed later in 2011 with the “Coast 2 Coast” Bicycle Ride, again to support the 2012 Festival.

Following the tremendous success of the Help for Heroes event last year when the Clarendon Suites’ team raised over £1200 for the charity, the staff decided that they would endeavour to stage similar fundraising events annually to help worthy causes.

Maintenance Team member Keith Franklin particularly wanted  the Macmillan Cancer Support Charity to benefit this year, as he and his wife Sue  have experienced at  firsthand the invaluable support the charity is able to  provide  when  Sue was diagnosed with breast cancer a little over three years ago.

Keith and Sue along with their son Ben, a chef at the Clarendon Suites, and fellow Maintenance Team member Tony Young set about organising this year’s terrific evening of live family entertainment which took place at the end of July.  With more than 300 people turning up to support the event, well over £1600 was raised on the night.

Guests were treated to some Rock ‘n’ Roll classics performed by the group Shindig who kindly offered their services after hearing about the Help for Heroes event held last year; pop-reggae band Icon sang a selection of UB40 hits, and Keith, along with son Ben and daughter Emily and their band Broken Myth entertained one and all with a set of modern rock songs, whilst a DJ ensured everyone got up on to the floor to dance the night away.  Younger guests too had a fun filled evening which included professional face painting and some captivating close-up magic.

The staff are already discussing plans for another event next summer when they hope to improve on this year’s success and raise even more for their chosen charity.

75th Anniversary Celebration

75th Anniversary Celebration

W Bro John Emms, Assistant Provincial Grand Master, presided at the 75th Anniversary celebrations of the Lodge of Fellowship 5579, at Stirling Road, Birmingham.

Following a ceremony of passing, senior Past Master W Bro David Plimmer gave a very informative talk on the origins and formation of the Lodge and its thirteen original founders. The Lodge had been consecrated by the then Provincial Grand Master RW Bro Col WF Wyley and following the installation of the first Worshipful Master, all three sets of working tools were presented by the then Assistant Provincial Grand Master, W Bro Brigadier General Lord Henry Seymour.

Present at the celebration were representatives from mother (Doric 4167) and grandmother (Fletcher 1031) Lodges, and to commemorate the event, on behalf of the lodge W Bro Ramesh Sethi, Master, presented members with a pair of specially designed cuff-links and a lapel badge, also donating a pair to the Provincial Museum.

The menu for the 1935 consecration was a serious piece of history in itself. The 8 course meal had consisted of Oysters or Hors d'oeurves, Petite marmite, Dover Sole with crème Veloute, Saddle of mutton with redcurrant jelly, Roast Pheasant with game chips and salad, Coupe Jacques, Dessert and Coffee! The present day festive board was a simpler, but still celebratory affair, with the distinct atmosphere of a birthday party. A beautiful cake displaying the Lodge crest, baked by the wives of Master Elect Bro John Taylor and W Bro Brian Rogers, was jointly cut by the Worshipful Master, the Assistant PGM and the senior Past Master.

In the best traditions of our fraternity the evening concluded with a toast to the Lodge, proposed by the Assistant PGM, coffee, singing and cake.
