A Grand donation to St Mary's Hospice

Forward Lodge is celebrating 150 years of its existence and I as Master together with my wife Pauline have chosen Birmingham St Mary's Hospice and the British Heart Foundation as our charities for the current year. As part of our fundraising activities, our Charity Steward, W Bro Mike Howard rang West Bromwich Building Society and they were more than happy to assist us in supporting the hospice. This resulted in the presentation of a cheque for a thousand pounds.

Presentation of £1000

Other events are being organised this year for the British Heart Foundation. Barclays Bank have already held a charity event in Sutton which has raised about £300. The lates event was on Friday 7th July at Barclays in Castle Bromwich, and Barclays Bank are going to match any funds raised on the day. Early indications show that a further £200 will have been raised on he day.

There are other Masonic events celebrating our special anniversary on 16th October at St Paul's and a formal ladies evening at Moor Hall Hotel, Sutton on the 18th of November. There are still some place left for the Ladies Night if brethren and their Ladies wish to join us, anyone wishing to do so should contact me, Allan Nelmes at Forward Lodge without delay.

Orders unite to help the Stratford Cancer and Eye Hospital

W Bro Martin Grahame-Dunn has this year found himself in the chair in four orders simultaneously, so decided to take the opportunity to bring the orders together for a ladies night in order to celebrate the support received by our ladies and to raise money for the Stratford Cancer and Eye Hospital appeal.

The orders represented were:

  • Monolithos Lodge No 8475 (the host Lodge)
  • The Shakespeare Lodge of Mark Master Masons No 40 TI
  • The Shakespeare Lodge of Royal Ark Mariners No 40
  • The Leamington Priors Preceptory of Knights Templar No 647

The event raised a total of £950 and pictured below is W Bro Martin Grahame-Dunn and Brother Damien Isaak who made a presentation of the cheques, along with Miss Kate Hughes, the principal lady at the Ladies Night. This is in addition to the donation of £500 from the Warwickshire Masonic Charitable Association earlier this year.

About the Stratford Cancer and Eye Hospital Appeal

Stratford Hospital is run by South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust.  The Trust runs four hospitals across South Warwickshire and provides safe, effective, compassionate care for a population of over half a million people.

There are exciting plans to build a new state of the art hospital in the centre of Stratford.  The first phase will provide first class Cancer and eye services for local residents of Stratford and surrounding districts.

Without these services near to home, patients previously  had to travel long, tiring distances to other facilities which are further afield to receive treatment. In some cases cancer patients decided to go without their treatment as they were unable to travel long distances every day, when they may already be feeling weak from treatments.

The new treatment centres for cancer and eyes will make a huge difference to the local community by expanding the choice and services available in their home town.

The South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust Charitable Fund is registered charity no. 1056424. The Trust has launched The Stratford Hospital Cancer and Eye Appeal to raise £1 million to pay for special enhancements to the new hospital.

The Appeal is entirely independent from the NHS. Run through our independent charitable fund, it receives no statutory funding but relies entirely on the generous support of the local community, businesses and grant making trusts. It is thanks to our donors, fundraisers and volunteers that the Trust can invest in special enhancements, equipment and services to provide best possible care and comfort for patients.

It doesn't get much better than this

Two years planning, teams from Grand and Provincial Grand Lodges and 200 Brethren, including 28 Founders all came together at the University of Warwick on 3rd June 2017 to do something that does not happen very often these days; witness the consecration of a new Lodge, The Collegiate Lodge No 9943; in the brand new and impressive Slate Conference Suite at the University Campus.

This Lodge has been brought into being as part of the pioneering Universities Scheme which is helping young people find Freemasonry; in this case forging links with students, alumni and workers of the University of Warwick, Coventry University and Coventry Colleges.

Many will have watched the Sky 1 Series 'Inside the Freemasons' and been delighted to see how successful the Scheme is. In support of further growth the Lodge was consecrated by the RW Assistant Grand Master and President of the Universities Scheme, Sir David Wooton, supported by the Provincial Grand Master of Shropshire, RW Bro Peter A Taylor, and the Provincial Grand Master of Worcestershire RW Bro Robert C Vaughan. The Assistant Grand Master used the consecrating elements of corn, wine, oil and salt according to ancient custom and was assisted by the Grand Chaplin, VW Bro Rev Canon Michael Wilson, who delivered a splendid Oration worthy of the occasion. RW Bro Sir David Wootton welcomed the newly consecrated lodge into the Universities Scheme, it being the 74th Lodge to join.

Also supporting the event was the Past Assistant Grand Master,  RW Bro David K Williamson, founding President of the Universities Scheme together with W Bro Edward Lord, the current Chairman of the Universities Scheme who together with the Consecration Team were subsequently proposed as Honorary members.

The Provincial Grand Master for Warwickshire, RW Bro David F Macey, then Installed W Bro Mark J Greenburgh as the first Master who then in turn invested him as the Immediate Past Master. The Master, who is shortly to be appointed as the Chairman of the Universities Scheme, finally invested his Officers including W Bro John F R Handley as Senior Warden and W Bro David Joyce as Junior Warden.

So what a great day it was. 'Inside the Freemasons' had given us a brief insight into the consecration of a new Lodge, here was an opportunity for many of the assembled Brethren to see and be involved in their first such event watching some of the 'stars' of that series at work including Deputy Grand Director of Ceremonies and soon to be Chief Executive Officer of the United Grand Lodge of England, W Bro Dr David Staples acting as the Director of Ceremonies; and for those who watched the programme he did not 'do a Staples!'

After the meeting, the guests dined at the University’s Scarman House dining hall and enjoyed a splendid Festive Board meal befitting such an occasion.

With the party over the hard work begins; making this Lodge a success. Discussions are already taking place with potential candidates with a first regular meeting to take place in October.
