The Masonic Paper Competition 2015/6

As part of the Development and Education Committee, we are continuing to set up a new central database of papers written by members of our Lodges, and which can be drawn on by all. This will be in addition to continuing to deliver Orations.

The Development and Education Committee is chaired by Assistant Provincial Grand Master Philip Hall, PDepGDC. We have had some wonderful papers submitted over the last two years and would be happy to receive further submissions.

There are two cups available to the winners, one to keep and the other to return after 1 year. There are two categories also, one below the Chair and the other for W Bros. The committee has decided that new papers be sent to W Bro Keith Marchington, PAGDC in the first instance to collate, index and create the database. Keith would therefore welcome any submissions you may have whether these are old or new.

Papers can easily be sent to Keith at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. The closing date is 1st May 2016. The winners can present their papers to the Installed Masters meeting later in the year. If they prefer Keith could deliver them on their behalf.

To give you a few ideas, the following may encourage you to put pen to paper!

  1. Where did the Master and Wardens pillars come from?
  2. What is the significance of the little blue forget-me-not to Freemasonry?
  3. Why a black and white chequered carpet?
  4. Who was Adoniram, where did he and his family live, and how did come to prominence?
  5. What does the bible say about our freemasonry?
  6. Why did David wage war with just about every tribe around?

Warwickshire Masonic Charitable Association donates £150,000

This year's donations to non-masonic charities by the Warwickshire Masonic Charitable Association will amount to approximately £150,000. The larger sums have been distributed at a luncheon to which 28 recipients were invited.   In addition some 120 further charities will soon have received sums ranging from £250 to £1500. An amount has been kept in reserve so that urgent requests during the year can be met. Trustees of the Warwickshire Masonic Charitable Association evaluate the financial situation on an annual basis and allocate an amount depending on investment income for the year. Donations are subsequently made to registered charities which operate primarily within the area covered by the Province of Warwickshire. The process is managed on behalf of the Trustees by W Bro John Hayward, the Provincial Grand Charity Steward assisted by W Bro Bill Clark, the Provincial Grand Almoner.

A full summary of the donations will be published on the Provincial website as soon as all donations have been distributed.   Donations are grouped by:

  • Hospices, Hospitals and Air Ambulances
  • Carers and Support Groups
  • Homeless
  • Churches and Heritage Projects
  • Support Groups for Medical Conditions
  • Support for the Disabled
  • Sports and Clubs
  • Forces and Forces Help
  • Care Homes
  • Donations and Help for Masonic Events
  • Sight and Hearing Conditions and Research
  • Medical Research
  • Holidays and Support for Disadvantaged and Disabled People

Nominations for future donations to registered Warwickshire charities should be forwarded to John Hayward in the Charity Office at Yenton Assembly Rooms.

Pictured below are representatives from some of the larger recipient charities, who received their cheques at a lunch, hosted by the Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro David Macey, at the Tally Ho Conference Centre. After congratulating the representatives of the charities present, the Provincial Grand Master thanked all concerned with the organization and administration surrounding both the event and the donations.   Mr Richard Green, representing Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice, thanked the Province of Warwickshire for their tremendous support, on behalf of all the charity representatives.

The Warwickshire Provincial Grand Master presides over the Emulation Lodge of Improvement

The PGM at the Emulation LofI, United Grand Lodge of England
The PGM at the Emulation LofI, United Grand Lodge of England
On Friday 26 February the Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro David Macey presided over the Emulation Lodge of Improvement at the United Grand Lodge of England in Great Queen Street, London. The evening was truly spectacular with the meeting being held in Lodge Room 10 with it's high domed ceilings and grand architecture.

210 Freemasons attended the meeting, which included four Provincial Grand Masters and two Past Provincial Grand Masters. Over 100 Warwickshire Freemasons made the trip for the event and to support our Provincial Grand Master.

The main sections of the ritual were delivered by four members of the Lodge of Improvement who took a section of the second lecture each. Their delivery was flawless with near perfect recall, a strong lesson in ritual for all those in attendance.

The evening concluded with an extremely convivial Festive Board in the adjacent Connaught Rooms. 160 of the attendees sat down to dine and the evening was completed by great food and excellent company.
