Many Happy Opening Odes
When the Master of Concord Lodge 3239, W Bro Joe McCollum invited Brethren to sing an Opening Ode, they all immediately burst into a serenade of Happy Birthday Dear Ron.
This was in recognition of the 80th birthday of W Bro Ron Eamonson OBE, senior Past Master of the Lodge, which he found extremely moving, never having seen this happen during his 44 years as a Freemason. After the meeting Ron invited the Brethren to join him for a drink in the Buttery Bar prior to departing to join his wife Beryl at their Cruising Club for dinner with their "boating friends", where festivities continued until late.
The next day was Ron's actual 80th birthday, when he and Beryl took themselves to their three daughters, their husbands and their six grandchildren for a wonderful lunch.
His present from Beryl is a trip on the Orient Express to the RHS Flower show at Chelsea, and from the family a three day break for the fourteen of them at a country park in the Derbyshire Peaks. In his usual inimitable style Ron's response to all this attention was "who said there's no fun in getting old, bring it on!
Athelstan Lodge helps Atherstone Scouts
After being contacted by the Leader of Atherstone Scouts, who had received a grant of £100 from Grand Lodge, the Master, Wardens and Secretary of Athelstan Lodge 1333 visited them at their Headquarters and were very impressed. As a consequence the Scouts were invited back to the Lodge Rooms where the Junior Warden gave a very interesting talk, outlining the many similarities between Freemasonry and Scouting. This was very well received by all the Scouts who asked many questions and showed great interest.
The lodge subsequently donated £600 to help send the pack on a camping holiday in the summer. They also donated £600 to Mancetter Scouts and a further £330 to Polesworth Abbey Scouts towards the building of a new Headquarters.
