INTRODUCTION TO FREEMASONRY

One of the oldest social and charitable organisations in the world, the roots of modern Freemasonry lie with the medieval stonemasons that built our castles and cathedrals, yet it is as relevant today as it was hundreds of years ago.

Freemasons use four important guiding principles to help define their path through life: Integrity, Friendship, Respect and Charity.

Membership is open to people from all backgrounds and the organisation’s aim is to empower members to be the best they can be – it’s about building character, supporting members as individuals and helping them make a positive contribution to society.

Freemasonry provides a structure for members to come together under these common goals, enabling people to make new friendships, develop themselves and make valuable contributions to charitable causes. We are one of the largest charitable givers in the country, contributing £42 million to deserving causes in 2019.

  • There are over 200,000 Freemasons in England and Wales.

  • There are more than 7,000 Lodges spread throughout England and Wales.

  • There are Six million Freemasons worldwide.

WHAT IS FREEMASONRY

  • Masonry consists of a body of men brought together for the sake of mutual intellectual, social and moral improvement.

  • Masonry recognises no distinction of religion and emphasises the duties of citizenship. Religious or political discussion is not permitted in Lodge meetings.

  • Masonry offers no monetary advantages.

  • Masonry supports a wide range of charities, both Masonic and non-Masonic.

WHY BECOME A FREEMASON

People have their own reasons why they enjoy Freemasonry. The following is a sample of some of the reasons given:

  • Achievement – progressing through the various offices in the Lodge to become Worshipful Master.

  • Brotherhood – making new friends and acquaintances from all walks of life, every background and age group.

  • Charity – being able to contribute to deserving causes, both Masonic and non-Masonic.

  • Education – learning from peers and mentors by practising ritual and making short speeches.

  • Knowledge – finding out about the history and mysteries of Freemasonry.

  • Self improvement – making a contribution to your family and society.

IS IT FOR ME?

Freemasonry means different things to each individual – making new friends, contributing to society, celebrating a long tradition, experiencing personal growth, taking up a hobby, having fun.
