PROFILES

The Provincial Grand Lodge of Warwickshire is headed by the Provincial Grand Master and he appoints to assist him in the management of the Province a Deputy and four Assistants. Please find below a comprehensive biography of each respective leader. 

David F. Macey

Provincial Grand Master of Warwickshire

R.W. BRO. DAVID F. MACEY

PROVINCIAL GRAND MASTER

David Macey was born in South Shields in 1948. He retired at the end of 2006 after being Headteacher of a very successful school in Bromsgrove for 20 years. He is married to Sandra and they have two sons and a granddaughter and three grandsons.

David was initiated into Loyal Travellers Lodge 2733 in 1978 and served as Master in 1991. He is a member of a number of other Lodges. He was appointed as a Provincial Assistant Grand Director of Ceremonies in 1997; Sword Bearer in 2000; and Provincial Junior Grand Warden in 2002. His appointment as Past Assistant Grand Director of Ceremonies came in 2006. He was appointed an Assistant Provincial Grand Master in 2008 and was promoted to Past Senior Grand Deacon also in 2008.

He was Director of the Warwickshire 2012 Festival for the Masonic Samaritan Fund from 2006 until he became Provincial Grand Master in July 2010, and is also active in Royal Arch, Mark Masonry and Royal and Select Masters.

He has a great love of the outdoors, mountain walking, climbing and sailing. He is also a keen supporter of Sunderland Football Club and Worcestershire County Cricket Club.

W. BRO. CHRISTOPHER J. ROGERS

DEPUTY PROVINCIAL GRAND MASTER

Chris is a Freeman of the City of London, having been born in Croydon in 1947. He married a Black Country lass which brought him to the Midlands and has five children and nine grandchildren (at the time of writing). His business management career began as Marketing Director with an international pharmaceutical company back in the 80’s at which time he travelled extensively and lived for some years in Germany. For the last 15 years of his working life, before he retired in 2005, he was the Founder and CEO of an International Medical Market Research and Marketing Consultancy. His retirement was cut short by his appointment as Provincial Assistant Grand Secretary in 2010.

 

Chris was initiated into McMahon Lodge in London in February 1988 and became Master in 1995. After moving to Warwickshire, he joined Birchfield Lodge in 1997, becoming Master in 2003, 2013 and again in 2018. He is also a member of the Warwickshire Installed Masters Lodge, the Provincial Grand Stewards Lodge, Vellum Lodge and Stanley Lates Lodge.

 

His first Provincial Rank in Warwickshire was as an Acting Provincial Steward in 2009 with subsequent promotion to Assistant Secretary in 2010, Provincial Secretary in 2011 and an Assistant Provincial Grand Master in 2015. He was appointed as the Deputy Provincial Grand Master in 2018. He received Provincial honours as Past Provincial JGW in 2011 and his first Grand Rank appointment as a PAGDC in 2013. He was promoted to PSGD in 2016.

 

Royal Arch activity has seen him exalted into Imperial College Chapter, London in 1990, becoming Z in 1999, 2008 and 2009. He joined Amity Chapter in Warwickshire in 2003, becoming Z in 2010 and is also a member of the Warwickshire First Principals Chapter. He was appointed a Royal Arch Provincial Grand Steward in 2014. 

 

Participation in other Orders include Mark and Royal Ark Mariners, Knights Templar, Rose Croix, Allied Masonic Degrees, Royal and Select Masters, The Operatives and St Thomas of Acon.

 

Christopher was for many years a Sea Scout Leader in Sutton Coldfield, and taught youngsters in the Sea Scout Troop to sail on Powell’s Pool in Sutton Coldfield. His former hobbies included dabbling in Amateur Dramatics (particularly whilst living in Germany) but behind the scenes as a director or stage manager rather than treading the boards. His current ones are few outside Freemasonry. Reading, Golf (but not picked up a club for years), grandchildren and gardening. Tried to think up a few exotic hobbies but failed miserably.

W. BRO. PETER P. MANNING

ASSISTANT PROVINCIAL GRAND MASTER

Peter was born in Birmingham in 1948 although spent his childhood in Leicestershire and attended Lutterworth Grammar School. He has been happily married to Jayne for 45 years and they have two sons, Benjamin and Oliver and four grandchildren, Maisie, Oscar, Arabella and Otillie. In 1986 he established his own Architectural Practice in Leamington Spa, which he ran until 2010 when he amalgamated with a local Practice of Architects, “Retired” and now acts as a Consultant to them.

Peter was initiated into the Lodge of Unity in 1980 by his Father in Law and became Master for the first time in 1993. In November 2013 he Initiated his two sons into the Lodge of Unity in a Double Ceremony. He has subsequently Passed and Raised them, again in Double Ceremonies.

In 2006 W Bro Manning was a Founding Member of The Morgan Lodge No. 9816, which meets in Malvern in the Province of Worcestershire and was their second Master in 2008. His first Worcestershire Provincial Appointment was as Past Provincial Senior Grand Warden. In 1999 he was appointed Past Provincial Junior Grand Deacon, 2005 Past Provincial Grand Registrar, in 2011 Past Provincial Junior Grand Warden and in 2013 as Provincial Senior Grand Warden.

He was exalted into the Royal Arch in 1986 into Jephson Chapter No. 4336 and was First Principal in 1996 and 2005. In 2002 he was appointed as Provincial Deputy Grand Director of Ceremonies and Past Provincial Grand Scribe N. in 2004. He is a member of Knight Templars and Mark Master Masons. As the Tercentenary Co-ordinator for Warwickshire he has been extremely involved on the organising committees of both MFest300 and the Classic 300 Series of Classic Car Runs.

His hobbies include all forms of Motor Sport - He has owned a variety of Morgan Sport Cars over a 30 year period and also an Austin Healey, MG, TVR and Maserati. He presently owns one of the last Rover V8 engined Morgan Plus 8’s, an Aston Martin V8 Vantage and a Lotus Elise, which he regularly uses on track. He is also a member of Worcestershire Masonic Motor Club. He played Rugby for Old Coventrians, Claverdon and was Club Captain from 1978-82 and South Warwickshire. He enjoys photography, travel – having covered almost all of Europe in the Morgan including several Alpine Passes, good food and wine and walking, his two Golden Retrievers who are all well versed in the Masonic Ritual.

W. BRO. DAVID A. STANFORD

ASSISTANT PROVINCIAL GRAND MASTER

David was born in South Norwood, Croydon in 1954 and the family moved via London to Hertfordshire where David grew up. A keen sportsman he played various sports as a schoolboy at County level and for South East England. A week before going to the University of York to study Economics David decided to go into hotels and completed an HND at Oxford Polytechnic (now Oxford Brookes University so David can now honestly say that he went to Oxford University!)

Training in London, David became Assistant Manager at the Inn on the Park Hotel (now Four Seasons) in Park Lane whilst the reclusive richest man in the world Howard Hughes was staying there. Together with his wife Caroline, David turned around a number of hotels, winning awards along the way, including Billesley Manor at Stratford upon Avon. Having set up companies for others, David set up his own consultancy in 2014 and specialises in turning around hotels and hotel companies for banks and setting up hotels and hotel companies for high net worth individuals.

Married to Caroline for over 40 years they have two children Alistair and Katherine and four grandchildren.

Initiated into Stoneleigh Lodge No 725 in 1992 David joined several other Lodges including the Swan of Avon Lodge in his home town of Stratford upon Avon and in March 2017 his son Alistair was initiated. David’s first provincial Appointment came in 2004 to Acting Assistant Director of Ceremonies, Provincial Deputy Director of Ceremonies, Provincial Junior Grand Warden, and then in 2012 to Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies. In November 2017 David was promoted to Assistant Provincial Grand Master of Warwickshire and will be focusing on promoting Freemasonry in Warwickshire. In 2014 David was appointed to Grand Rank as an Acting Assistant Director of Ceremonies of the United Grand Lodge of England.

David is Chairman of Reading Court Sheltered House Scheme, and a Board Member of the Masonic Housing Association. For the past 14 years he has been Chair of the Trustees for the locally based Parenting Project Charity and is now its Patron.

Outside of masonry David’s interests include travelling, music concerts, theatre, cars, fishing, Tottenham Hotspurs, sailing, but most importantly family and friends.

W. BRO. DAVID M. GREENWOOD

ASSISTANT PROVINCIAL GRAND MASTER

David was born in Rugby 1966 and moved quite soon afterwards (With his parents) to Birmingham, living firstly in Halesowen and then Edgbaston.

He went to school, first at Blue Coat School in Harborne, then to Magdalen College School, Oxford as a choral scholar spending time from the age of 8 singing in Magdalen College chapel and eventually becoming head chorister.

After leaving the college choir, he continued his schooling at Magdalen College School taking both O and A levels. Whilst at school it was obvious to most that intellectually he was no Einstein, but was school captain in both Rugby and Hockey, played first 11 cricket and was senior NCO in the school cadet force.

David is a member of the Hotel, Catering and institutional management association and have work all over this country in the Hotel industry. He has worked for a number of internationally recognised brands as well as some smaller independent groups. His speciality is running and organising large events, although it is rare that he gets a chance nowadays.

David married Sian in 2004 although they have been together for over 22 years. They just couldn’t find a free week-end to make it official! And they have 2 cats.

His hobbies include Formula 1, The Theatre especially Musicals, Films (Especially classic war movies) and he is a Sci-fi and Blackadder geek.

His masonic career started on 1st December 1989, when he was initiated in to Rokeby Lodge 4118 in Rugby by his father. He took the chair in 2001 having worked his way through all progressive lodge offices. He was appointed as a Prov AGDC in 2007, and promoted to ProvDGDC 2010. He became Provincial JGW in 2014 and was promoted to acting Prov SGW in 2015.

He belongs to a number of craft lodges, Warks. Installed Masters Lodge 4538, Warks Prov. Grand DC’s 9620, St Wilfrid’s Lodge 8530 (Leics. & Rutland) being Worshipful Master 2013.

W. BRO. JOHN B. HAYWARD

ASSISTANT PROVINCIAL GRAND MASTER

John was born in Shirley, Solihull, met Linda in 1967 and married in 1970. They have two daughters Angela & Zoe, and two granddaughters, Poppy & Summer. Married life began in Coleshill, followed by Hollywood (not the one in the US), then returned to Shirley until 1996 when mid-life redundancy took them to Cumbria for almost ten years, returning to the Midlands in 2005.

 

John’s career started with banking but decided on a career change in the 1970s when the computer age began in earnest. Starting programming at BSA Motor Cycles, and subsequently went through numerous positions with British Gas, ending as Systems Implementation Manager and Regional Quality Controller. Member of the British Computer Society & Institute of Administrative Management. The move to Cumbria as hoteliers, lasted for almost ten years, returning to Droitwich apparently to retire, but having renewed acquaintance with the late W Bro Rodney Pitham, he was soon recruited as a Visiting Officer. He had never severed ties with the Province, and continued to attend most Lodge meetings and was promoted to Past Provincial Junior Grand Warden in 2000 and in 2011 became Assistant Secretary to Chris Rogers. The following year, saw a vacancy in the Charity Office and from 2012 to 2018, he was Provincial Charity Steward, appointed to Grand Rank in 2014 and invited to become Assistant Provincial Grand Master in September 2018.

Initiated into the Lodge of Faith & Hope 4772 in February 1976, by his father W Bro George Hayward, John was Master in 1986, 1996, 2008 & 2009 and is still Lodge Secretary. Whilst in Cumbria, he joined Windermere Lodge 2217, and became Master there in 2003 & 2004. He is also a member of the Warwickshire Installed Masters Lodge 4538, and was Junior Warden to the Provincial Grand Master in 2011. In Royal Arch, he was exalted into the Chapter of Faith & Hope 4772 in 1978, and was MEZ in 1991, 2004 & 2015. In Windermere Chapter 2217, he was MEZ in 2006 & 2011 and still attends regularly. Also MEZ of Godson Chapter 2385 (Worcestershire) in 2011, and a member of Warwickshire First Principals Chapter 4538, Cumberland & Westmorland Principals Chapter 8071 and Worcestershire Installed First Principals Chapter 6889.

 

Also active in Mark, Royal Ark Mariners, Royal & Select Masters and Red Cross of Constantine.

 

Outside interests include Droitwich Spa German Twinning Association, amateur horology (not much recently), Aston Villa (from a comfortable seat), and foreign travel, particularly France & the Far East, and of course spending time with friends, family & particularly the grandchildren.
